🔥 BMR Calculator – Basal Metabolic Rate

Use our free BMR Calculator to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) — the number of calories your body burns each day at complete rest.

This helps you understand your daily energy needs, whether your goal is weight loss, maintenance, or muscle gain.

🧠 What is BMR?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) represents the minimum amount of energy (calories) your body requires to maintain vital functions such as:

  • Breathing

  • Blood circulation

  • Body temperature

  • Organ function

BMR is measured when the body is at rest, in a neutral environment, and after fasting. For most people, BMR accounts for 60–75% of total daily calorie expenditure.

🧮 How is BMR calculated?

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is widely regarded as the most accurate formula for estimating BMR in healthy adults.

Formula used:

For men
BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5

For women
BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

This equation has been shown to be more accurate than older formulas such as Harris-Benedict for most people.

🔁 BMR vs Daily Calorie Needs

BMR is not the same as the number of calories you should eat each day.

To estimate your daily calorie needs, BMR is multiplied by an activity factor based on your lifestyle:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise)

  • Light activity (1–3 workouts per week)

  • Moderate activity (3–5 workouts per week)

  • Very active (daily exercise or physical job)

🧬 Factors that affect BMR

Several factors influence a person’s basal metabolic rate:

  • Body composition – More muscle mass increases BMR

  • Age – BMR tends to decrease with age

  • Sex – Men generally have higher BMR than women

  • Genetics – Inherited traits can affect metabolism

  • Hormones – Thyroid function and hormonal changes impact BMR

  • Diet & fasting – Severe calorie restriction can lower BMR

⚠️ Accuracy & limitations

BMR calculators provide an estimate, not a precise measurement.

Actual BMR can only be measured using specialized equipment such as indirect calorimetry. However, for most people, formula-based BMR calculations are accurate enough for nutrition and fitness planning.

Is this BMR calculator free?

Yes. All health calculators on Eqsy are completely free to use.

No. This calculator is for informational purposes only and should not replace professional medical advice.

BMR and RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) are often used interchangeably, but BMR is measured under stricter conditions. In practice, the difference is small for most people.
