How to Play Hearts

Hearts is played with 4 players: South, West, North, and East. You play as South.

Each round has 13 tricks. The player with the 2 of Clubs leads the first trick. Players must follow suit if possible. If you cannot follow suit, you may play another suit.

Penalty cards are:

Hearts: 1 point each
Queen of Spades: 13 points

The match continues until a player reaches 100 points. The player with the lowest score wins.

Shooting the Moon

If one player takes all 26 penalty points in a round, they shoot the moon.

That player receives 0 points, while all other players receive 26 points.

Online Multiplayer

Create a public or private room, copy the invite link, and send it to other players.

Players can also join using a 6-character room code. The room panel shows the current phase, connected players, spectator count, and your role.

Tips for New Players

Try to dump high-risk cards when you cannot follow suit. Be careful with Spades when the Queen of Spades is still in play, and avoid leading Hearts until they are broken. Early tricks are important because they can decide whether you stay safe or get forced into taking penalty cards.

What is the goal of Hearts?

The goal of Hearts is to finish the match with the lowest score. Players try to avoid taking Hearts cards and the Queen of Spades, which add penalty points.

Hearts cannot be led until Hearts have been “broken.” Hearts are broken when a player is forced to play a Heart because they cannot follow the suit that was led.

How is the winner determined?
