How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

The goal of Mahjong Solitaire is to remove all tiles from the board by matching pairs of identical free tiles.

A tile is considered free when there is no tile directly on top of it and at least one of its long sides (left or right) is completely open. Only free tiles can be selected and removed.

Most tiles must be matched with an identical tile:

Bamboo tiles match the same Bamboo tile.
Dot tiles match the same Dot tile.
Character tiles match the same Character tile.
Wind tiles match the same Wind tile.
Dragon tiles match the same Dragon tile.

Some tiles have special matching rules:

Flower tiles can be matched with any other Flower tile.
Season tiles can be matched with any other Season tile.

Game Controls

New Game – Start a brand-new random board.
Restart – Restart the current board from the beginning.
Undo – Reverse your previous move.
Hint – Highlight a possible matching pair.
Shuffle – Rearrange the remaining tiles if no good moves are available.
Pause – Pause the timer and hide the board.

Game Modes

Classic Mode
Play a standard Mahjong Solitaire game and submit your score to the global leaderboard after clearing the board.

Daily Challenge
Every player receives the same board each day, making it easy to compare scores with friends and other players.

Practice Mode
Play without leaderboard scoring and enjoy a relaxed experience while learning the game.

Scoring

Your final score is based on how efficiently you clear the board. Finishing with fewer hints, fewer shuffles, and smarter tile choices will earn a higher score. When you complete a game in Classic Mode or the Daily Challenge, you can submit your name to the leaderboard.

Is Mahjong Solitaire the same as traditional Mahjong?

No. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player puzzle game where you remove matching tiles from the board. Traditional Mahjong is a multiplayer game played with four players using different rules.

How do I remove a tile?

A tile can only be selected if it has no tile directly on top of it and at least one of its left or right sides is completely free.

What happens if there are no more moves?

If no matching pairs are available, the game is blocked. Start a new game or use available hints or shuffle features if enabled.

Can I undo a move?

Yes. Use the Undo button to reverse your previous move whenever it is available.

Is every Mahjong Solitaire puzzle solvable?

Not always. Some randomly generated layouts may become unsolvable depending on the order in which matching pairs are removed. Many players enjoy finding the best strategy to avoid getting stuck.
